LincYou Terms of Service
These terms and conditions of use (the "Terms") apply to your access to and use of the LincYou mobile application and related services (the "Platform"), owned and operated by LincYou Technologies Inc. ("LincYou", "we", "us" or "our"), a corporation incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act with its registered office in Vancouver, British Columbia.
By creating an account or using the Platform, you agree to these Terms and to our Community Guidelines, and you acknowledge our Privacy Policy.
The Community Guidelines form part of these Terms. Breaking the Community Guidelines breaks these Terms. Where the two differ on the same point, these Terms govern.
Please read Section 19, which limits our liability to you, and Section 20, which requires you to indemnify us in certain circumstances.
1. What LincYou is, and what it is not
LincYou is a student network. It exists so that people can find, and speak to, the person who was a step ahead of them: the student who took the course last year, the graduate who did the internship.
LincYou is a venue. It is not a referee. We confirm that a member controls an official university email address when they choose to verify. We do not assess or guarantee the quality of anyone's advice, and we do not check anything else a member tells you. That assessment is yours to make.
Nothing on the Platform is professional advice. What you read here is the experience and opinion of the members who wrote it. It is not legal, financial, medical, immigration, admissions, academic or employment advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional or from your university's own channels.
We are not your university. LincYou is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any university unless we expressly say so. What you read here about a course, a program or an instructor is not official and may be wrong or out of date. Check anything that matters against your university's own records.
2. Who may use LincYou
2.1 Age
You must be at least sixteen (16) years old. The Platform refuses a date of birth under sixteen at registration. If we learn that an account holder is under sixteen, we close the account and delete the information, keeping only what we must for legal or safety reasons.
If you are sixteen or seventeen, additional protections apply automatically and cannot be turned off: your date of birth is never displayed to anyone, our moderation staff see only that your account belongs to a member under eighteen, and reports involving you are reviewed first. There is no advertising anywhere on the Platform, to you or to anyone.
2.2 Where the Platform is offered
The Platform is currently offered in Canada, except Quebec, to people affiliated with a university we support. It is not offered in Quebec. We plan to add more countries — the United States is next — and these Terms will be updated when we do.
Membership works through your university: registration requires choosing a university from the list we support, and we add universities deliberately. If your university is not on LincYou yet, you can join the waiting list at www.lincyou.com.
Once you have registered, travelling does not close your account. Eligibility is assessed at registration.
2.3 Capacity and authority
You must have the legal capacity to enter into a binding contract. If you use the Platform on behalf of a club or other organization, you confirm you are authorized to bind it, and "you" means both you and that organization.
2.4 Restrictions
You may not use the Platform if we have previously terminated your account or barred you, or if you are barred from receiving services under applicable law, including Canadian sanctions and export control law.
3. Your account
3.1 Real identity
LincYou is a real-identity network. Register using your own real name and accurate information, and keep it current. You may not create an account for anyone else, impersonate any person or organization, or misrepresent your affiliation, qualifications or experience.
Section 10.3 explains posting anonymously, which is a separate thing and does not change this.
3.2 One account
One personal account each. You may not sell, rent, transfer or share it, or let anyone else use it.
3.3 Signing in
There are no passwords. You sign in with a one-time code sent to your email address, so keeping your email account secure is what keeps your LincYou account secure.
We will never ask you for a sign-in code. If someone contacts you claiming to be LincYou and asks for one, it is not us. Tell us at support@lincyou.com if you think someone else has been in your account.
3.4 Accuracy
You are responsible for the accuracy of what you tell us and what you publish. Giving false information is a material breach of these Terms.
4. University verification
You can create an account with any email address. Your account is unverified until you confirm that you control an official university email address, which you do by entering a one-time code we send to it.
An unverified account can use the Platform fully, including posting — verification changes what other members can rely on about you, not what you can do.
Verification confirms one thing: that you control that address. It does not confirm your program, your year, your courses, your experience, your expertise, your competence or your character, none of which we check. Everything on your wall other than your verified status is what you typed. Exercise your own judgement about people you meet here.
We may refuse, suspend or revoke verified status, and we may ask you to verify again.
5. Updates to these Terms
We may amend these Terms.
When an amendment is material, the Platform asks you to review and accept the new version before you post again, and records the version you accepted. If you do not accept it, you can stop using the Platform and delete your account.
6. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy at www.lincyou.com/legal/privacy describes how we handle your personal information. It forms part of these Terms.
7. Licence to use the Platform
Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable licence to use the Platform for your own personal, non-commercial use as a student or graduate.
You must not:
- copy, modify, translate, adapt or create derivative works of the Platform;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, or try to derive its source code or underlying structure, except where that restriction is prohibited by law;
- use the Platform, or anything obtained from it, to develop, train, fine-tune or evaluate any artificial intelligence or machine learning model, or any product that competes with the Platform;
- scrape, crawl, harvest or extract content or data by automated means, or reproduce a substantial part of it;
- resell, sublicense or otherwise commercialize the Platform or its content;
- remove or alter any proprietary notice; or
- circumvent or interfere with any security, rate-limiting or access control feature.
We reserve all rights not expressly granted.
8. Content and ownership
8.1 Our content
The Platform and everything in it other than member content, including its software, design, text, graphics, interfaces and trademarks, is owned by us or our licensors and protected by intellectual property law.
8.2 Your content
"Your Content" means anything you submit, post, upload or send through the Platform.
You keep ownership of Your Content. You are responsible for it, and you confirm that you own it or have the rights necessary to post it and to grant the licence below, and that it does not infringe anyone's rights or break any law or these Terms.
You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable and sublicensable licence to host, store, reproduce, adapt for formatting and display, publish, distribute and display Your Content, solely in order to:
- operate and provide the Platform;
- show Your Content to the audience you posted it to; and
- moderate the Platform and enforce these Terms.
This licence does not permit us to use Your Content to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models. We have committed not to, in our Privacy Policy, and we bind our providers to the same restriction.
The licence for an item ends when you delete it or your account is deleted, except that copies may persist in backups until they roll over, we may keep the minimum needed to keep another member's reply intelligible, and we may keep copies where moderation records, safety, dispute resolution or the law require it.
8.3 Feedback
If you send us suggestions or feedback we may use them freely, without compensation or obligation to you.
9. Copyright and trademarks
9.1 Copyright notice
© 2026 LincYou Technologies Inc. All rights reserved.
9.2 Trademarks
LincYou, the LincYou logo and uCoin are trademarks of LincYou Technologies Inc. Other marks belong to their owners and nothing here grants you a licence to use them.
9.3 Copyright complaints
We respect copyright and expect our members to do the same.
Under the notice and notice regime in the Copyright Act (Canada), a copyright owner who believes content on the Platform infringes their copyright may send us a notice containing the information the Copyright Act requires, at support@lincyou.com. We forward a compliant notice to the member responsible and keep the records the Copyright Act requires. We will not disclose a member's identity to a complainant except under a valid court order.
We terminate the accounts of members who repeatedly infringe copyright.
10. Community rules
Our Community Guidelines set out what belongs here and what does not, in nine categories. They form part of these Terms and are served in the application. This section adds the rules that carry particular legal weight.
10.1 Writing about identifiable people
You will write about real people here: instructors, classmates, employers. When you do:
You must write about your own direct experience, make clear that your opinion is an opinion, confine yourself to a person's professional or academic conduct, and be able to stand behind any fact you assert.
You must not:
- state as fact something you do not know to be true;
- allege that an identified person has committed a crime, professional misconduct, harassment, discrimination or abuse. Report that to your university and, where appropriate, to the police. This is not the place for it and we will remove it;
- write about a person's private life, family, health, finances, appearance, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, accent or immigration status;
- write personal attacks, insults or slurs; or
- publish anyone's contact details, home address or other personal information.
Understand the consequence. Canadian defamation law makes the author of a statement responsible for it. A statement of fact about an identified person that is both damaging and false can expose you personally, and the protection that exists for opinion does not extend to false statements of fact. Anonymity on the Platform does not change this, because we can always see who posted.
Anyone written about may ask us to review the content, under Section 10 of our Privacy Policy.
10.2 Course materials and academic integrity
Copyright in course materials usually belongs to the instructor or the university, not to you. Do not upload lecture slides, problem sets, solution manuals, past examinations, textbook extracts or recordings of lectures unless you have permission or the use is clearly permitted by law. Your own notes, in your own words, are yours to share.
The Platform is for understanding your work, not for having it done. You must not post an open assessment or solicit answers to one, provide or solicit work to be submitted as someone else's own, advertise contract cheating or ghostwriting, or share material your university's academic integrity policy prohibits sharing.
Your university's academic integrity policy governs you and we do not override it. Where something here would put you in breach of it, the policy wins.
We do not disclose individual account or academic-integrity information to a university, unless you authorize it, the law requires it, or it is reasonably necessary to address an imminent risk of serious harm. Material posted in breach of this section is removed and may cost you your account.
10.3 Anonymous posting
You can post without your name being shown to other members.
Anonymity is from the community, never from us. The staff who review reports can always see who posted. You are as responsible for an anonymous post as for a signed one, and we will act on your account for an anonymous post exactly as we would for any other.
11. Acceptable use
11.1 Zero tolerance
We have no tolerance for objectionable content or for abusive members. Content that breaks these Terms or the Community Guidelines is removed. Members who post it lose their accounts.
11.2 Things you must do
Comply with the law and with your university's rules. Treat other members with basic civility. Honour the commitments you make. Report content and conduct that breaks these Terms. Keep your information accurate.
11.3 Things you must not do
You must not:
- post content that is unlawful, defamatory, fraudulent, obscene, hateful, or that promotes violence;
- encourage anyone to hurt themselves, share methods or instructions for self-harm or suicide, promote disordered eating, or mock someone who has said they are struggling;
- harass, bully, stalk, threaten or intimidate anyone, or encourage others to;
- discriminate against or demean anyone on the basis of a protected characteristic;
- post sexual content, or sexualize any member;
- impersonate anyone, or misrepresent your identity, affiliation, qualifications or experience;
- publish another person's private information without their consent;
- record, transcribe or publish a private conversation without the consent of everyone in it;
- send spam, chain messages or repeated unwanted contact;
- advertise or sell anything, recruit for a business or a multi-level marketing scheme, or use the Platform commercially;
- manipulate the Platform's ranking, verification, reporting or uCoin systems, including by running multiple accounts or generating artificial activity;
- harvest or scrape information about members, or build a database of them;
- introduce malware, exploit a vulnerability, conduct unauthorized security testing, or interfere with the Platform's operation;
- use the Platform to arrange anything unlawful; or
- help or encourage anyone else to do any of this.
11.4 Reporting a vulnerability
Report security vulnerabilities to support@lincyou.com. Do not exploit it, do not access other members' data, and give us a reasonable chance to fix it before disclosing it. We will not pursue a good faith researcher who follows this.
12. Connections, safety and wellbeing
12.1 What happens between members is between them
Conversations, introductions and any arrangement you make with another member are between you and them. LincYou is not a party to them. We do not supervise them, we do not guarantee that anyone will do what they said, and we make no representation about any member's suitability or trustworthiness.
12.2 Your own judgement
Use ordinary caution. Verify claims that matter. Keep early conversations on the Platform. Do not send money to another member or share financial information. If you meet in person, meet somewhere public and tell someone where you are going.
If something feels wrong, leave. You do not owe anyone an explanation. Report it, and block them.
12.3 Crisis, self-harm and wellbeing
Talking about your mental health is allowed here. Asking for help is allowed here. We will not remove your post or restrict your account because you said you are struggling.
LincYou is not an emergency or crisis service and we are not available around the clock. If you or someone you know needs help now:
| Resource | How to reach it | When |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency | 911 | Immediate danger, or someone needs medical help now |
| 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline | Call or text 988, free, across Canada | Thinking about suicide, or worried about someone else |
| Hope for Wellness Helpline | 1-855-242-3310, or chat online | 24/7 support for Indigenous students |
| Here2Talk | here2talk.ca, by phone, chat or app | Free 24/7 counselling for BC post-secondary students |
Your own university's counselling and safety services are on its website, and they exist for exactly this.
12.4 No employment or agency relationship
Nothing here creates an employment, agency, partnership or joint venture relationship between you and us, or between you and another member.
12.5 Off-platform conduct
We may act on your account in response to conduct off the Platform where that conduct creates a risk to our members, including credible allegations of violence, harassment or exploitation.
13. uCoin
13.1 What uCoin is
uCoin is a recognition balance that reflects your contribution to the community. It is a number.
13.2 What uCoin is not
uCoin is not money, is not currency, is not a security, is not a payment instrument, is not stored value, and is not a deposit or a claim on us.
- uCoin has no monetary value and confers no ownership right.
- uCoin cannot be bought.
- uCoin cannot be exchanged, redeemed, converted or withdrawn for cash or anything else, by anyone, in any circumstance.
- We do not promise that uCoin will ever be redeemable for anything.
- uCoin cannot be transferred, sold, gifted or traded, does not form part of your estate, and does not accrue interest.
13.3 Our control over uCoin
We may, at our discretion and without liability to you, change or withdraw the ways uCoin is earned, adjust or cancel a balance obtained in breach of these Terms or through error or manipulation, and discontinue uCoin entirely.
If your account is deleted, any balance goes with it and has no value.
13.4 The Platform is free
There is nothing to buy on the Platform. No purchases, no subscriptions, no advertising. If we ever introduce anything paid, we will publish separate terms and ask for your agreement before charging you.
14. Search, AI and Linc
Two features use AI models, both on Google Vertex AI in Montreal, on the same provider that hosts the rest of the Platform.
Search. The text of posts and comments is turned into search embeddings, which is what makes searching the Platform work. Your search queries themselves are never stored, logged or sent to analytics.
Linc. Linc is the in-app assistant: you tell it what you need, and it finds the people and posts on LincYou most likely to help, or shows your profile to members whose questions you could help with. What you type into Linc is processed to answer you and is not stored — Linc keeps no transcript. Our Privacy Policy, Section 9, describes exactly what Linc keeps and what it never sees. Linc's suggestions are an aid, not advice, and Section 1 applies to anything you read through it.
We do not use your content or your messages to train or fine-tune AI models, and our provider is contractually prohibited from doing so. We will not change that without telling you and asking for your consent. There is no AI agent acting on your behalf.
15. Moderation and enforcement
15.1 What we do
An automated filter blocks a narrow class of content at the point of posting, such as severe slurs and explicit threats; it reads text only and does not scan images or links. Beyond that, nothing scans your posts or your messages.
Every report is reviewed by a person on our own staff, and no member content is sent to any outside company for moderation.
We may remove, restrict or decline to display content, and we may warn, restrict, suspend or permanently remove an account, revoke sessions, or remove verified status.
15.2 What we are not
We do not pre-screen content beyond the filter described above, and we have no obligation to monitor the Platform. Content being here is not our endorsement of it and does not mean we have looked at it. Nothing in this section creates a duty on us to act.
15.3 Reporting and blocking
You can report any post, comment, message or account from within the application. Reporting is confidential. We never tell the person who reported them.
You can block another member at any time. You do not need to report first and you do not need to explain. Blocking takes effect immediately and we do not tell the person you blocked.
You can also reach us at support@lincyou.com.
15.4 How we respond
We match the response to the severity of the harm and act faster where the potential harm is greater. Depending on what happened we may remove the content, limit an account's reach or features, suspend the account for a period with a stated expiry, remove the account permanently, revoke its sessions, and preserve records and report to the authorities where the law requires it or someone's safety demands it.
15.5 Notice and appeal
Where we act against your content or your account we tell you what rule was involved, what we did, how long it lasts and how to appeal, unless telling you would compromise an investigation, break the law, or put someone at risk.
You can appeal. A person reviews it. If we got it wrong we put things back and tell you. Enforcement normally stays in place while an appeal is pending.
15.6 Emergencies
We may act immediately and without notice where there is a risk to someone's safety, a risk of serious harm to the Platform, or a legal requirement to do so.
16. Intimate images and child safety
Sharing an intimate image of a person without their consent is prohibited here, and it is illegal. This includes images created or altered by any tool, including AI, to depict a real person. Consent to an image being taken is not consent to share it, and consent to share it once is not consent to share it again.
If an intimate image of you has been shared on the Platform without your consent, report it through the reporting function, or write to support@lincyou.com. Tell us it concerns an intimate image and we will prioritise it. Nothing about your account changes because you asked for help.
We comply with orders made under provincial intimate-images legislation where it applies, including British Columbia's Intimate Images Protection Act — orders to remove, delete or de-index an image included. Send legal notices and court orders to support@lincyou.com.
Sexual content involving anyone under eighteen is prohibited in every form. Where we become aware of it we preserve the material and report it as the law requires.
17. App stores and other services
The Platform is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play, whose terms also apply. Neither store operator is a party to these Terms, neither has any obligation to support the application, and neither is responsible for any claim relating to it. To the extent the store terms require it, the store operators and their subsidiaries are third party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
We are not responsible for other services we do not control, or for their content or practices.
18. Suspension and termination
18.1 By you
You can delete your account yourself, in the application, at any time. Deletion takes effect after a thirty-day cancellation window, during which you can change your mind. What happens to your information is described in our Privacy Policy and at www.lincyou.com/legal/delete-account.
18.2 By us
We may suspend or terminate your account if you materially breach these Terms, if the law requires it, if we reasonably believe continued access creates a risk to another member or to the public, or if we discontinue the Platform on reasonable notice.
Except where immediate action is necessary under Section 15.6, we give you notice and, where appropriate, a chance to fix the problem.
18.3 What happens
Your licence ends, your profile stops being visible, blocks you set remain in force so they continue to protect you and others, your uCoin balance goes, and your personal information is handled as our Privacy Policy describes. Sections 8.2, 8.3, 13.3, 18.3, 19, 20, 21 and 22 survive termination, along with anything else that by its nature should.
18.4 If we discontinue the Platform
We will give you reasonable notice and a way to get a copy of your content and your personal information first.
19. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
19.1 Disclaimer of warranties
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Platform is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express, implied or statutory.
We disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, durability, title and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that the Platform will be uninterrupted, timely, secure or error free, that defects will be corrected, or that any content is accurate, complete, reliable, current or lawful.
We make no warranty about the conduct, qualifications or reliability of any member, or about anything that comes of a connection made here. Verification confirms control of a university email address and nothing more.
19.2 Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, LincYou, its affiliates and their respective directors, officers, employees, agents, suppliers and licensors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss of profit, revenue, opportunity, data, goodwill or academic, professional or business opportunity, however caused.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our aggregate liability for all claims arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Platform will not exceed one hundred Canadian dollars (CAD $100).
The Platform is free. You acknowledge that this allocation of risk is a fundamental basis of our agreement and that we would not provide the Platform without it.
19.3 Limits on these limitations
Nothing here excludes or limits liability for fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or anything else that cannot be excluded or limited by law.
Certain jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties or the limitation of liability for certain damages, and consumer protection law — including, in British Columbia, the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act — may give you rights these Terms do not affect. The provisions above apply only so far as applicable law permits.
20. Indemnity
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, you will indemnify and hold harmless LincYou, its affiliates and their respective directors, officers, employees and agents from any claim, loss, liability, damage, cost and expense, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of Your Content, your use of the Platform, your breach of these Terms or of any law, or your dealings with another member.
We will tell you about any such claim. You may not settle it in a way that imposes an obligation on us without our written consent, and we may take over the defence at your expense.
This section does not apply to the extent consumer protection law prohibits it.
21. Disputes and governing law
21.1 Talk to us first
Most problems can be solved without lawyers. Before starting a proceeding, write to support@lincyou.com describing the issue and what would resolve it. We will respond within thirty days and try in good faith to sort it out.
21.2 Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict of laws principles. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.
21.3 Jurisdiction
You irrevocably attorn to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Province of British Columbia. Nothing in this section deprives you of the protection of mandatory consumer protection law, or of any right to bring proceedings that cannot be excluded by agreement.
21.4 Time limit
To the extent permitted by law, a claim arising out of these Terms or the Platform must be brought within one year after it arises, or it is barred. This does not apply where applicable law prohibits or restricts the shortening of a limitation period.
21.5 No class proceedings
To the extent permitted by law, you and we each agree to bring claims only individually and not as a plaintiff or class member in a class, collective or representative proceeding. This does not apply where it is unenforceable under applicable law.
22. General
22.1 Language
These Terms and all related documents are drawn up in English.
22.2 Entire agreement
These Terms, the Community Guidelines, the Privacy Policy and any feature-specific terms we present form the entire agreement between you and us about the Platform. A feature-specific term governs for that feature only.
22.3 Severability
If a provision is held invalid or unenforceable it will be modified to the minimum extent needed to make it enforceable, or severed. The rest continues in effect.
22.4 No waiver
Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it.
22.5 Assignment
You may not assign these Terms. We may assign them to an affiliate or in connection with a merger, acquisition, reorganization or sale of assets, on notice to you.
22.6 Force majeure
We are not liable for a failure or delay caused by an event beyond our reasonable control.
22.7 Notices
We may give you notice by email to the address on your account, by in-app notice, or by posting on the Platform. You give us notice in writing to support@lincyou.com.
You consent to receiving notices and disclosures from us electronically, and agree that they satisfy any legal requirement that a communication be in writing.
22.8 Interpretation
Headings are for convenience. "Including" means "including without limitation". A reference to a statute includes its regulations and any successor legislation.
22.9 Third party beneficiaries
Except as stated in Section 17, these Terms create no right in favour of anyone who is not a party to them.
